The following is a list of the top ten most expensive cars in the world. We've combed the globe for the finest and most exotic automotive specimens that can zap your bank account faster than they can dash to 60 mph from a dead stop.
And let's face it, the majority of us will never see these cars in the flesh, let alone own one, but that doesn't mean we can't all appreciate (and dream a little) some of the finest and fastest pieces of automotive artwork the world has to offer.
Just a heads up, we've excluded classic cars that are being sold at auctions and are widely unavailable.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines…
10. McLaren F1 $970,000
The "cheapest" car on this list might just be one of the greatest.
Even though it debuted back in 1992, the McLaren F1 remains one of the fastest and most expensive cars on the market. With a price tag just shy of $1M and a top speed of 240 mph, the F1 was the car plastered on the walls of speed freaks and gearheads growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. McLaren even sought to make the F1 an "everyday" supercar with luxury amenities and seating for three (the driver sits up front and in the center). Mission accomplished.
With only 106 ever made, they are as rare as they are beautiful. Just don't crash yours.
9. McLaren P1 $1.1M
One of two McLarens mentioned in this list, the P1 is as rare as it is impressive. An electric motor attached to the back of a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 work together to create 903 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque combined. Top speed is limited to 217 mph, with the P1 making the stride from 0-60 in under three seconds.
Getting your sweaty palms on one of these won't be easy, though, Only 375 are being made and no doubt a good chunk of them are already spoken for.
9. Hennessey Venom GT $1.1M
We're starting to question the sanity levels of the folks over at Hennessey Performance Engineering but because they keep building fire-breathing speed-slashers like the Venom GT Spyder, our paper-thin regard for the laws of good taste are simply blown away.
They say everything is bigger in Texas and the Lone Star State-based tuning house is happy to provide truth to that statement.
The Venom GT is filled with enough horsepower to stretch across the Lone Star State itself, packing a mind-blowing 1,500 horsepower mined from a poisonous 7.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. A zero to 60 time is pegged at two seconds while Hennessey claims a top speed of 287 mph.
8. Zenvo ST1 $1.2M
Hailing from a country not renowned for its automotive industry, Denmark's Zenvo ST1 has certainly changed all of that.
Expensive ($1.2M) and exclusive (production is limited to only three cars per year) the ST1 features both a turbocharged and supercharged 7.0-liter V8 under its angry hood, giving it a top speed of 233 mph and a 0-60 time of three seconds. And you can even pronounce the name.
7. Maybach Landaulet $1.3M
Easily the slowest on our list of sleek and expensive supercars, what the Maybach Landaulet lacks in acceleration it more than makes up for in appointments.
The limousine-like, four-door sedan features a convertible roof that opens in rear, which means owners of this mega-Mercedes should be chauffeured around instead of setting up behind the wheel.
Adding to its $1.3M price point are other luxurious necessities like hand-polished champagne flutes, a rear-seat refrigerator, an automatic partition between driver and passenger, and an intercom system between the front and rear. No word if any Grey Poupon is included in the price.
7. Ferrari La Ferrari $1.3M
Italian for 'the Ferrari", Maranello's long-awaited successor to the Enzo supercar is nothing short of stunning. In fact, we're starting to believe mere words do it little justice.
Our awe aside, the $1.3M Italian stallion pumps out a hefty 789 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Power output is increased further via an electric motor, boosting the LaFerrari's horsepower to 950 and 664 lb-ft of torque by way of its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which is powered by an electric motor.
If you're thinking of owning one of these babies you better act fast, only 499 units are being made and they're likely to sell out fast.
7. Pagani Huayra $1.3M
Naming your car after the Incan "God of Winds" seems like a good start for any supercar, a fact the speed-obsessed folks over at Pagani must have known when first drawing up plans for the Huayra (why-rah).
With a top speed of 230 mph, the latest from Pagani can travel almost as fast as the wind, and at $1.3M can empty out your bank account even faster.
Under the svelte hood sits an AMG-sourced, 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that happily cooks up 730 hp and 740 lb-ft of torque. The Huayra can sprint to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and as if that wasn't enough, sports some breathtaking gullwing doors to boot.
Mark us down for two.
6. Koenigsegg Agera R $1.6M
Forget the responsible, safe side (*cough* Volvo!) of Swedish automotive engineering; the Koenigsegg Agera Rs's calling card has hair-raising performance and neck-snapping speed written all over it. Not exactly your typical Swedish bank vault on wheels.
For $1.6M the Agera R sports a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that creates a king's ransom in torque, 885 lb-ft to be precise, and an overwhelming amount of horsepower : 1,115!
Racing from 0-60 takes less than three seconds (2.9) with a maximum top speed of 260 mph. Interestingly, the Agera R can actually hit 270 mph but in order to do so owners need to sign a waiver for the speedy Swedes to unlock the speed limiter. Where do we sign?
5. Lambroghini Reventon $1.61M
With a name that sounds more like an electric shaver than a supercar, but just like other Lambos before it, the Lamborghini Reventon hails from Sant'Agata Bolognese and takes its name from a prized Spanish fighting bull that fought during the 1940s.
Only 20 copies have been produced and feature a 6.5-liter V12 engine that produces 650 hp and 478 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is pegged at 211 mpg while the sprint to 60 takes 3.4 seconds.
At $1.6 million the Reventon is the second most expensive Lamborghini behind the ultra-rare Veneno, not including the track-only Sesto Elemento ($2.2M) and the concept Aventador J ($2.8M).
4. Aston Martin One-77 $1.8M
$1.8 million can get you a lot of stuff (use your imagination) but it can also get you exactly one Aston Martin One-77. The British supercar comes packing a 7.3-liter V12 engine that ever so politely (it's British after all) spits out 750 hp and 533 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is clocked at 220 mph while a 0-60 sprint takes 3.4 seconds.
Yes, $1.8 million is a lot to ask but when you're Aston Martin and building only 77 examples of the car, it comes with the territory.
4. Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster $1.8M
Unfortunately, the Aston Martin One-77 has to share fourth place with another car. Fortunately, that car is the Zonda Cinque Roadster, made by Italian boutique automaker Pagani.
So what does its $1.85 million price tag snag you? For starters, the Zonda Cinque wears a full carbon-fiber suit with a specially developed carbon-titanium chassis underneath. Weighing in at 2,667 lbs, the Zonda Cinque is actuallyone pound lighter than a Mini Cooper S (2,668 lbs). However, it's powered by 678 hp and 575 lb-ft of torque AMG-sourced V12 with a top speed of 217 mph and a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds, making it slightly faster than a Mini Cooper.
Oh, and Pagani only built five of them, so happy hunting.
3. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse $2.6M
If we're going to talk about cars worth more than your life, then we're gonna have to mention Bugatti at some point. The French-made hypercar is rocketed along by a 7.9-liter W16 engine that belts out 1,200 hp and 1,106 lb-ft of torque. The car can sprint to 60 from a standstill in 2.6 seconds and currently holds the record as the fastest open-top convertible with a top speed of 254 mph. It's brother, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport remains the faster production car in the world with a top speed of 268 mph and can be had for a "only" $2.4M – what a steal!
2. W Motors Lykan Hypersport $3.4M
Think for a second on countries that produce supercars and chances are Lebanon isn't on your list. But that could very well change with W Motor's Lykan Hypersport.
We still don't know a whole lot about the Lykan Hypersport, and official figures have yet to be released or verified but we do know the Middle East's first supercar is set to sell for $3.4M, feature a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, a top speed of 245 mph, and a 0-60 time of 2.7 seconds.
Yawn, right? Well if that's not enough to get your majesty excited, the Lykan will feature diamond-coated LED lights, gold-stitched leather seats, and a holographic interface, making it the first car ever to sport such a display.
Ok, moneybags, so what are your chances of snagging one? Well, production numbers remain fuzzy but we're probably looking at between four and seven being made.
1. Lamborghini Veneno $4M
Lamborghini's habit of producing jaw-dropping supercars both in price and appearance is renowned the world over, so naturally the Italian automaker saw fit to celebrate its 50 year anniversary the only way it knew how: by releasing the unrepentant piece of motor porn known as the Lamborghini Veneno (Spanish for "poison"). The raging bull's latest creation debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and sports a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated (no turbocharging here) V12 that produces 750 horsepower. Top speed is said to be 221 mph with reported 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds.
Thinking of buying one? Don't. Lamborghini only made three for sale and they're all already spoken for. Maybe one will turn up on eBay. In 2050.
Honorable Mentions:
Maybach Exelero $8M
While not a production car, the Maybach Exelero is the most expensive road-going car in the world. Initially commissioned by Fulda Tires in 2005, only one was ever made and has since been sold to rapper "Birdman." Apparently he got high and bough a rather expensive set of wheels.
Top speed is reported to be 218 mph with a reported 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, courtesy of its twin-turbo V12 engine.
Lamborghini Sesto Elemento $2.2M
Italian for "sixth element" the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento isn't even out yet and of the 20 being made, all are already spoken for. Sorry.
The other bad news: it's not street legal in the U.S., meaning those folks in 'Merica who were fortunate enough to front the $2.2M bill can only enjoy them on the track. Oh, too bad!
Ferrari Enzo $670,000
Named after the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari, the Ferrari Enzo supercar is a 12-cylinder, mid-engine Italian nightmare on wheels. Only 400 copies were made between 2002 and 2004, making it an extremely rare, but oh-so-amazing, acquisition.
Top speed is limited to 217 mph while a 0-60 dash takes 3.5 seconds.
